Many of my out of focus problems with Nikon bodies went away when I switched to back button focusing.And I always keep moving the focus point to where it is needed with the joy stick on the D 500 right below AF On button. Before sending the camera back, try using AF-ON for focusing to see if that helps make your problem go away. A well-balanced exposure shows a fairly even series of these peaks and valleys across the scale. The vertical part of the scalethe peaks and valleysshows the percentage of the scene that is bright and dark. In all cases, I try and make sure the focus point is where I want it to be. To turn on the Histogram display, activate Live View and then press the info button until the Histogram appears over your image.
